Whales, Wine and Penguins Photo Tour
Hermanus is reputed to have the best land-based whale watching in the world, but for better photography we get even closer to these gentle giants by joining a certified operator for a tour into the bay. Our Whale Charter departs at 9h00 for a 2 hour whale viewing boat cruise in Walker Bay, where these gentle giants gather every year between June to December.
You will be collected at 06h30 in the morning, in order to get Hermanus in time for the first whale viewing boat cruise. If we’re lucky we might see Bryde’s whales, Humpback whales and photograph Southern Right whales as they lob-tail (holding its tail clear out of the water, like a giant black butterfly), sky-hop (lifting its head out of the water), playing with kelp and if you are lucky you might even get a shot of a whale breaching (when a whale jumps three-quarters out of the water, pivot onto its side and back, and fall back with an enormous splash) with your personal photocoach on hand to help you with your camera settings.
After lunch in Hermanus, you can choose between a fabulous wine tasting at a wine estate in the area, or a visit to the Harold Porter Botanical Gardens, well known for its rich coastal fynbos and one of Cape Town’s birding hotspots, before we set our attention to photograph African Penguins at Stoney Point in Betty’s Bay.
As we drive back on to Cape Town in the late afternoon on one of the most scenically beautiful roads in South Africa, we have ample opportunity for landscape photographs (this road is known as the “Golden Mile” amongst landscape photographers)
