Old School Black and White Darkroom Experience

“Develop” your skills as a photographer by stepping into another dimension and experience the dark arts and visual alchemy of black & white 35mm film photography. One of the greatest thrills for any “old school” photographer must have been seeing their first print appear under a red light in a dish of full of chemicals. Now you too can experience this thrill on our Old School Black and White Experience in Kalk Bay, Cape Town.

The ability to photograph with 35mm film, developing the black and white film and then printing it yourself it a skill not easy to master, but will greatly enhance your skills as a photographer.

Every participant is given a Minolta 35mm manual camera with lenses to use. After a familiarisation session with your manual SLR camera, loading your B&W film, we explore different locations in picturesque Kalk Bay for interesting compositions and tonal range to photograph. In our darkroom you will learn how to develop your B&W film by hand, and while your freshly developed film dries, we enjoy lunch at one of the many restaurants in Kalk Bay. (for your own account)  After lunch you will be shown how to print a contact (proof) sheet and we print a 8”x10” enlargement of your favourite photograph to take home with you.
